Don McLean’s final album for United Artists was a musical tour de force, and the best self-contained account of the full breadth of McLean’s talent. Recorded live in England, in Manchester, Bristol, London, and Oxford, the 26 songs encompassed not only the artist’s best-known work, but also many of his personal favorites, among them works by other composers (including Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War”).

Don McLean's second album, American Pie, which was his first to gain recognition after the negligible initial sales of 1970's Tapestry, is necessarily dominated by its title track, a lengthy, allegorical history of rock & roll, because it became an unlikely hit, topping the singles chart and putting the LP at number one as well. "American Pie" has remained as much a cultural touchstone as a song, sung by everyone from Garth Brooks to Madonna, its title borrowed for a pair of smutty teen comedies, while the record itself has earned a registered three-million plays on U.S. radio stations.

Country music originated from the rural, southern regions of the USA in the early 20th century; born of early folk and blues music, the melodic ballads of early country music became a staple of popular American culture over the forthcoming years, as the genre soon became synonymous with Hollywood’s ever-burgeoning Western movie soundtracks throughout the first half century.

With a lineup of trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, bassist Doug Watkins, pianist Kenny Drew, and drummer Pete La Roca, McLean laid down a hard blowing session of six tunes based completely on blues motifs. Many critics - as well as jazz fans - hold to the opinion that Bluesnik may be McLean's most accessible session for the label. That said, not all of these tunes are blues numbers strictly speaking. They use blues forms, but don't all fall into the conventional 12-bar structure, and therefore even move hard bop paradigms a bit. The title track opening the set is a prime example of this given that it quotes the theme in 12-bar but moves through a knotty ten-bar sequence before roaring into a furious but fluid cut time structure that allows for a maximum "stretching" of the changes by Drew…

Two of Helen Reddy's 1974 albums, Love Song for Jeffrey and Free and Easy, are combined onto one CD on this release, with the addition of historical liner notes and a couple of tracks from her 1978 album Live in London. Reddy was near the peak of her popularity in 1974, but although each album has a couple of hit singles, they're erratic works in which the singer flits uncomfortably between rock-influenced styles and more middle-of-the-road vocals.
