As it has been said: no matter where you go, there you are. With his new album You, Forever, Sam Evian, the project of New York-based musician, songwriter, and producer Sam Owens, is here to add some eternity to that sentiment. “This is you, forever,” he says. “It’s about accepting that you are responsible for you, that you’re in charge of your actions. Everything you do affects others and yourself, so, no matter what you choose to do, be there and learn from it.” It’s a mantra that powers self-starter Owens, who debuted his first Sam Evian full-length, Premium, in the fall of 2016. The notion takes on a dual meaning that is echoed across You, Forever. You, Forever is Owens’s foray into a more soul-baring sensibility and places the artist directly in the sightlines and heartlines of his listeners.

Omnivore's second installment of Buck Owens' The Complete Capitol Singles opens up with "Sam's Place," the song Buck took to number one early in 1967, and closes with "I Wouldn't Live in New York City (If They Gave Me the Whole Dang Town)," which peaked at nine in late 1970. In other words, this double-disc compilation traces the waning years of Buck's imperial era, ending at a point when he's still having hits but starting to have diminishing creative returns. While there are a couple of bum sides to be heard in these 36 tracks usually, they arrive in the form of duets with his son Buddy Alan or a half-baked B-side the consistency of these singles remains remarkable, as do the chances Owens takes.

Omnivore's 2013 double-disc set Buck Em! The Music of Buck Owens (1955-1967) provides an interesting spin on Buck Owens: through a collection of mono singles, live tracks, alternate takes, early 45s, and other rarities, it tells an alternate history of Buck's prime years. If there's a hit on this 50-track collection, it's almost always in a version that's slightly different than what usually shows up on a standard greatest-hits. "Second Fiddle," "Love's Gonna Live Here," "I Don't Care (Just as Long as You Love Me)," "I've Got a Tiger by the Tail," and "Before You Go" are all in mono, there's an early version of "Ain't It Amazing Gracie," and "Act Naturally" is live, so they're familiar enough to not feel jarring and they do provide the core of a collection that winds up wandering into some pretty interesting territory.

Arriving four years after Rhino’s 21 # Hits: The Ultimate Collection, Time Life’s 20-track All-Time Greatest Hits covers much of the same territory. The compilations share 14 tracks, which makes sense because those 14 songs are the core of Buck’s canon – “Act Naturally,” “Love’s Gonna Live Here,” “Streets of Bakersfield,” “Waitin’ in Your Welfare Line,” “Sam’s Place,” “I’ve Got a Tiger by The Tail” – and it’s hard to imagine a hits collection without them. Neither one is better than the other – both are terrific samplers of Buck Owens & the Buckaroos at their peak, both are great introductions to one of the great bands of country music, both are tremendously entertaining, and picking one over another is just a matter of taste, availability, and price.

A collection of urban contemporary, dance/pop, funk, and R&B beats, rhythms, arrangements, and compositions fused in efficient, if unmemorable fashion by Robert Owens. This album didn't generate much attention, mainly because everything had a detached, generic quality, and also because there was neither a great single nor a standout album cut to hook any audience.

Shostakovich’s two Piano Concertos span a period of almost thirty years. The youthful First Piano Concerto is a masterful example of eclecticism, its inscrutable humour and seriousness allied to virtuoso writing enhanced by the rôle for solo trumpet. Written as a birthday present for his son Maxim, the Second Piano Concerto is light-spirited with a hauntingly beautiful slow movement. With the permission of the composer’s family, Boris Giltburg has arranged the exceptionally dark, deeply personal and powerful String Quartet No. 8, thereby establishing a major Shostakovich solo piano composition.

When originally issued in July of 1965, no one either noticed or cared that in reality The Instrumental Hits was actually a compilation of tracks already available on early Buck Owens & His Buckaroos albums (except for the band's signature song "Buckaroo," which is unique to this package). Regardless of the ratio of new to recycled material, this collection amply highlights the remarkable talents of Owens and his Buckaroos. The retrospective nature of this LP allows listeners to experience the evolution of the potent instrumentalists who accompanied Owens circa 1961-1965.
