Avant-garde musician John Cage, Catholic mystic Thomas Merton, Beat writers Gary Snyder, Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, Psychotherapists Carl Jung and Erich Fromm, Zen teachers Robert Aitken and Philip Kapleau, Philosophers Karl Jaspers and Martin Heidegger, 20th century giants, all have one thing in common — they were deeply influenced by Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki, a gentle scholar-practitioner from Japan. This litany of names is merely suggestive of the massive impact that D. T. Suzuki had on western culture — an influence that is documented in a new film, A Zen Life — because so far we haven’t mentioned the 100 or so books that have found their way (by now) into the hands of millions of people throughout the world, works that include classics such as A Manual of Zen Buddhism, An Introduction to Zen Buddhism, and The Essence of Buddhism. Simply put, the Buddhist world would be very different today had D. T. Suzuki not come to the west. Suzuki was in fact a “kalyana mitra” (spiritual friend / teacher) to an entire generation.

Bach Collegium Japan and Masaaki Suzuki have sung of the wonders of Christmas a number of times, in Bach’s cantatas and Christmas Oratorio as well as in Handel’s Messiah. Here, instead, we hear the choir a cappella in a selection of classic Christmas carols. Masato Suzuki, son of the ensemble’s founder and director, has selected some of the best-loved songs of Christmas, such as Adeste fideles and Silent Night, as well as less familiar hymns, arranging them especially for these singers. A consummate organist, he also performs a number of Louis-Claude Daquin’s noëls variés – keyboard variations on Christmas songs which became a highly popular genre in 18th-century France.

Masaaki Suzuki is firmly established as a leading authority on the works of Bach, both in his capacity as director of the Bach Collegium Japan and as an organist and harpsichordist. In recent years he has also been appearing in front of eminent orchestras worldwide, however, conducting repertoire as diverse as Britten, Fauré or Mahler. For his first recording of 20th century repertoire, Suzuki has chosen to collaborate with the acclaimed Tapiola Sinfonietta in an all-Stravinsky programme. The disc begins with the music for Pulcinella – here in the concert suite devised by the composer – which Stravinsky later described as ‘the epiphany through which the whole of my later work became possible’. Pulcinella was commissioned in 1919 by the Ballets Russes, for which Stravinsky had already written The Firebird, Petrushka and The Rite of Spring. For this adaptation of an early eighteenth-century commedia dell'arte libretto, he based his score on existing music, initially ascribed to Pergolesi although material by other baroque composers is also included.

Hiroshi Suzuki is probably the best know japanese jazz trombonist with Hiroshi Fukumura. Hiroshi started his professional career in the Nobuo Hara' Sharps & Flats big band, played for various jazz artists as well as Sadao Watanabe, Takeshi Inomata, Yuji Ohno or Shungo Sawada. In 1969, he recorded for Takt Jazz Series, the japanese jazz masterpiece Variation with the Masahiko Togashi Quintet, and Up Up And Away with his big band, The Happy Cats. Later, Hiroshi joined the new super Jazz combo formed by Akira Ishikawa & Hiromasa Suzuki, the Freedom Unity, featuring saxophonist Takeru Muraoka & bassist Kunimitsu Inaba, all present on this recording. Titles include the familiar Jazz standard Walk Tall composed by Joe Zawinul for Cannonball Adderley, Cat by Takeru Muraoka and Romance by Hiromasa Suzuki plus two original compositions by Hiroshi Suzuki, Shrimp Dance & Kuro To Shiro.
